Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for two Child Care Aide 1 Substitute positions in the New York State School for the Blind. The incumbent of this position will be responsible for maintaining the safety and well-being of students, escorting students to and from activities, attending to students’ personal hygiene needs, assisting in the development of appropriate daily living skills, and providing supervision and assistance as necessary. Under the supervision of a Child Care Aide 2, duties include, but are not limited to:
• Ensure students are properly housed according to established rules, regulations, standards, and policies;
• Assist in establishing a behavior management plan and implement the plan consistently;
• Assist in monitoring of individual Confidential Student Information books and data collection;
• Maintain a healthy, nurturing, homelike environment that attends to individual needs of each student; and
• Actively participate in home, residential, Health Center and school communications.
Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively with students and staff, follow written and spoken instructions, and relate to the students being supervised. Candidates must be in good health, good physical condition, and able to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children and participate in physical activities such as swimming.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference may be given to candidates who have:
• An Associate’s Degree or higher in the Human Services field;
• Experience as a Nurse’s Aide;
• Skills in sign language;
• Experience in behavior modification, orientation and mobility;
• Certification in water safety, CPR, first aid, advanced first aid, or EMT; and
• Demonstrated skills working with the multiply disabled.
Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Child Care Aide 1.

Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This will be a temporary, hourly, on-call position. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Fees associated with fingerprinting do not apply if applicant’s fingerprints exist in the NYS TEACH System. Hours will vary depending on shift and dormitory assignment. This position leads to a maximum salary of $20.42. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts
