Duties Description The Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 will support the regional biologists in administering projects and performing job duties that further New York State's deer, migratory waterfowl, and upland game bird programs. Job duties and responsibilities by program area include:
Deer Management (70%)
- Review applications, perform site visits, make impact determinations, and issue permits under the Department's deer management assistance and deer damage assistance programs utilizing the Department's wildlife conflicts database.
- Collect, prepare, and deliver carcass/tissue samples for the Department's chronic wasting disease and epizootic hemorrhagic disease surveillance and response efforts.
- Collect, record, and submit deer population and demographic data from hunter-harvested deer.
- Field and provide educational resources to the public and stakeholders regarding deer biology, management, and hunting.
- Maintain educational resources, tools, and equipment.
Migratory Game Birds (15%)
- Collect, record, and submit data as part of the Department's annual waterfowl survey.
- Collect, record, and submit data as part of the Department's biennial mute swan survey.
- Assist with waterfowl trapping and banding efforts.
- Review applications, perform site visits, make impact determinations, and issue records of authorization to take Canada geese under a federal depredation or control order.
- Maintain educational resources, tools, and equipment.
Upland Game Bird (15%)
- Stocking of pheasants on the Department's regional Wildlife Management Areas.
- Collect, record, and submit data as part of the Department's annual American
woodcock and grouse surveys.
- Maintain educational resources, tools, and equipment.
Minimum Qualifications 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries; marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Outlook.
- Proficiency with Geographic Information Systems and Global Positioning Systems.
- At least one year of experience related to deer management.
- At least 6 months of experience related to game bird management.
Additional Comments This is a hourly appointment currently funded through 3/31/2026, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date.
Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required.
Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain.
Must be able to work in remote areas.
Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions.
Travel may be required.
Overtime may be required.
Overnight travel may be required.
Weekends and holidays may be required.
