Duties Description The Research Scientist (RS) 1 will participate in all phases of environmental, occupational, and reproductive epidemiological research and surveillance. They will support higher level research scientists in research studies that monitor and evaluate the effects of exposure to toxic substances at home, at work, and in the community; and assist with exposure investigation and surveillance to identify and reduce health risks.
The RS 1 will assist other senior research scientists in problem definition, study design, execution, analyses, and interpretation and presentation of results. They will assist higher level scientists in responding to environmental health concerns from the public, including making presentations at public events. Either through courses, training, internships or limited professional experience, the RS 1 will have experience in environmental, occupational, and/or reproductive epidemiologic research, exposure assessment, identification and surveillance of adverse health outcomes, environmental risk factors, and basic skills in statistical analysis.
Minimum Qualifications Research Scientist 1, Grade 18: a bachelor’s degree in biology, public health, epidemiology, infection control, statistics/biostatistics, biomedical science, environmental health, environmental science, or a related degree*, AND at least two years of relevant post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field; OR a Master’s degree in one of the above fields, AND at least one year of post-degree professional research experience.
*Related Degrees may include: Medical Anthropology, Psychology, Nutrition, Nursing, Pharmacology, Mathematics, Education, Medical Geography, Sociology, Economics, or other relevant Social Science, or Natural Sciences.
Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will possess a master’s degree in public health, environmental health, epidemiology, or another closely related field. They will have experience in environmental, occupational, and/or reproductive epidemiologic research. They will identify and observe health outcomes, biomonitoring and environmental risk factors of disease and impacts on health. The preferred candidate will coordinate large statewide biomonitoring projects as well as focused projects in communities with environmental contaminations.
The incumbent will have experience reviewing environmental health information, conducting epidemiology literature reviews, developing reports, and summarizing scientific literature. They will work with a wide array of stakeholders including epidemiologists, statisticians, laboratorians, health educators, academics and clinicians. The preferred candidate will have excellent written and oral communication skills for diverse audiences; experience with community based educational events; and possess strong organizational, and interpersonal skills. The incumbent will be involved with discussing laboratory exposure results with individuals in terms of exposures, the environment, and their health. They will be leading team meetings and meetings with federal, State, and public local health partners. The preferred candidate will be working in a clinical setting to collect biospecimens and training in bloodborne pathogens. The nominated candidate will have intermediate or advanced proficiency in Statistical Analysis System (SAS), BASE, Structural Query Language (SQL), R, Tableau, or Geographical Information System (GIS) software.
